September brings more than cooler weather – it delivers World Heart Day on the 29th, making this the perfect time to focus on heart health. World Heart Day was created to raise global awareness about cardiovascular disease prevention, and if you’re wondering why your heart needs extra attention now, the statistics tell a compelling story: cardiovascular disease affects nearly 80% of people over 65, but most heart problems remain preventable with the right approach.
Heart health after 50 deserves serious attention because this decade marks when risks accelerate significantly, especially for women after menopause and men with accumulated lifestyle factors. However, now more than ever, younger people are being diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even blood clots.
Prevention is always better than a cure. So the time to think about heart health is now, for any age.
Your September Heart Health Action Plan
- Diet Matters Our bodies need fat, but there are good and bad fats. Stay away from hydrogenated, processed fats found in lots of foods such as peanut butter, coffee creamers, and most processed foods. Focus on good fats such as coconut oil, avocado oil, and olive oil, as well as nuts and seeds.
- Move Your Body Daily You don’t need marathon training. Just 30 minutes of moderate activity most days dramatically reduces heart disease risk. Start with brisk walks after dinner or take stairs instead of elevators.
- Fuel Your Heart Right Focus on omega-3 rich fish twice weekly, colorful vegetables, and whole grains. Harvard research shows that people eating fish regularly see significant heart attack reductions. As most of us don’t eat a proper balance of omega-3 foods vs omega-6, supplementation with a good, high quality fish or flax oil is beneficial.
- Manage Stress Effectively Chronic stress elevates cortisol and damages arteries. Try meditation, deep breathing, or yoga – studies prove these approaches work better than supplements for heart protection. As it is difficult to stay away from stress these days, supplements such as ashwagandha, holy basil, and theanine help your body deal with this stress effectively. There are good blends also such as Terry Naturally Cortisol or Food Research High Stress Adrenal.
Smart Supplementation
While lifestyle changes provide the biggest benefits, targeted supplements can support your efforts. In addition to the ones mentioned above, CoQ10 is beneficial for heart health as well as may help skin health, brain health, lung protection, and decreasing oxidative stress. CoQ10 supplementation is important as we age, and beneficial for anyone taking a statin medication, as well as those with certain health conditions.
Cayenne pepper has also gained a lot of attention for heart health. It has many benefits such as improved blood flow, lower blood pressure, reduced inflammation in heart and blood vessels, antioxidant to protect the heart from damage from free radicals, and lowering cholesterol. You can of course eat the peppers, use supplemental powders in food or drinks, or take the supplement in capsule form.
Furthermore, nitric oxide support is another great option for heart health. Your body’s natural nitric oxide production decreases in your 40’s, and is also affected by lifestyle and diseases. Low nitric oxide levels can affect blood flow and arterial health. Beetroot extract and other nitric oxide-supporting nutrients help maintain healthy circulation.
However, avoid mega-doses – NIH research confirms that more isn’t better when it comes to heart health supplements.
